What to Expect in Counselling: Minute by Minute
Reaching out for therapy often triggers anxiety about the unknown. Will you have to bare your deepest secrets? Will you be judged? What actually happens in the room? Here is an open, unhurried walkthrough of exactly how we begin, from your first click to your first month of care.
What Happens When We First Sit Down
Whether we meet in person in our Surrey clinic room or connect virtually across BC, the first ten minutes are designed to help your nervous system settle. You are never expected to launch immediately into painful trauma or raw vulnerability.
Welcoming & Settling In
We introduce ourselves and confirm basic comfort. If in person, you can take off your coat, adjust your seat, or have water. If virtual, we check sound and video clarity and confirm you are in a private, secure location where you cannot be overheard.
Informed Consent & Privacy in Plain English
Before we discuss your personal life, we review informed consent and privacy laws (BC's Personal Information Protection Act, PIPA). We explain the legal limits of confidentiality clearly: everything you share is held in strict professional confidence, except in rare legal circumstances (imminent risk of serious bodily harm to yourself or someone else, suspected abuse or neglect of a child or vulnerable adult, or a formal court subpoena). There are no surprises.
Collaborative Agenda & Pacing
We agree together on what we will focus on today. Rimsha will ask: "What felt most important to bring into the room today?" or "Where would you like us to start?" You set the direction. You can change topics or slow down at any point.
Establishing Your Comfort & Boundaries
We establish the ground rules of therapy: you have full control over what you disclose. If an inquiry feels too invasive or premature, you can simply say, "I'd rather not talk about that yet," and we respect that boundary without hesitation.
What You Do NOT Have to Do in Therapy
Many people avoid booking because of media portrayals of therapy as an interrogation or an emotional breakdown on a couch. At Soothing Souls Counselling:
- You do NOT have to tell your whole life story in one session. Healing is not a race. We start with what is present and manageable today.
- You do NOT have to cry or break down to have a "successful" session. Quiet reflection, practical problem-solving, cognitive reframing, and somatic regulation are just as transformative as emotional release.
- You do NOT have to answer any question that feels too private or overwhelming. You have the absolute right to say "pass" or "let's return to that later."
- You do NOT have to justify your cultural background, faith, or family dynamics. Rimsha understands South Asian intergenerational values and cultural contexts fluently.
- You do NOT have to commit to long-term therapy or sign up for blocks of sessions. You are always in control of your frequency and duration of care.
The Journey: From First Contact to Lasting Ground
First Contact & Free 15-Minute Consult
A no-pressure phone or video conversation. We discuss your main concerns, answer any questions about billing or format, and confirm whether Rimsha's approach feels like a comfortable fit for your personality.
Session 1: Intake & Laying the Foundation
We explore the background of what brought you in, identify your personal coping strengths, and establish 1–2 practical goals for our work together. We also practice a grounding skill so you leave feeling steadier than when you arrived.
Sessions 2–5: Building Skills & Processing
Depending on your focus (anxiety, crash recovery, relationships, or grief), we unpack emotional cycles, challenge cognitive traps, and build concrete emotional regulation tools you can use between sessions.
Sessions 6+: Integration, Independence & Graduation
Therapy should not make you dependent on your counsellor. As you gain emotional steadiness and self-trust, we space sessions out (from weekly to bi-weekly to monthly) until you feel confident maintaining your well-being independently.
