LGBTQ+ Affirming Counselling

QUICK CLINICAL SUMMARY

LGBTQ+ affirming counselling provides a safe, knowledgeable therapeutic space where sexual orientations, gender identities, and diverse relationship structures are fully respected and celebrated. We offer trauma-informed virtual care across British Columbia.

Is This Support Right for You?

You might resonate with this counselling focus if you are navigating:

  • ✓ You are navigating questions of sexual orientation, gender identity, or coming out to family and community.
  • ✓ You carry the emotional toll of minority stress, microaggressions, or societal discrimination.
  • ✓ You seek couples or relationship counselling that honors polyamorous, queer, or non-traditional relationship dynamics.
  • ✓ You are untangling cultural, religious, or familial rejection related to your identity.
  • ✓ You want a therapist where you do not have to educate your clinician on basic LGBTQ2S+ concepts.

Identity-Affirming Care Rooted in Safety and Unconditional Regard

Seeking mental health support requires opening up your deepest vulnerabilities. For lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit, non-binary, and questioning (LGBTQ2S+) individuals, reaching out for therapy can often carry the added trepidation of wondering: “Will this counsellor truly understand my lived reality, or will I be met with subtle microaggressions, pathologizing assumptions, or the burden of having to educate my clinician?”

At Soothing Souls Counselling, affirming care is not treated as a marketing buzzword — it is an active, principled clinical stance. We recognize that LGBTQ2S+ individuals experience higher levels of chronic anxiety, depression, and trauma not because of who they are, but because of moving through a world shaped by systemic heteronormativity, cisnormativity, and societal prejudice — an experience known clinically as minority stress.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for therapy to be 'affirming'?

Affirming therapy means your identity is treated as a healthy, natural, and valuable expression of human diversity — not something to be questioned, pathologized, or 'cured.' We recognize how systemic oppression and minority stress impact mental health, and we validate your lived reality.

Do you work with queer South Asian or racialized clients?

Yes. Rimsha Qureshi, MACP, RCC provides culturally attuned care that deeply understands the intersection of racial, cultural, religious, and queer identities, including the unique challenges of coming out or living authentically within collectivist communities.

Do I have to talk only about my gender or sexual identity in therapy?

Not at all. Many LGBTQ2S+ clients come to therapy for anxiety, workplace stress, grief, ADHD, or relationship communication. Having an affirming therapist simply ensures you can bring your whole self into the room without fear of judgment.

Are virtual sessions confidential?

Yes, absolutely. Sessions are conducted over a secure, encrypted video platform. If privacy in your home is limited, we offer telephone sessions or flexible scheduling to support your confidentiality.
