Is This Support Right for You?
You might resonate with this counselling focus if you are navigating:
- Navigating cultural expectations, filial obligations, and the pressure to meet family standards without sacrificing your own well-being
- Experiencing intergenerational conflict between Western individualist values and traditional South Asian collectivist heritage
- Feeling that mainstream therapy fails to grasp the nuances of joint family dynamics, arranged marriage, or community reputation
- Couples facing communication impasses influenced by in-law relationships, cultural adjustments, or immigration stress
- Newcomers to Canada adjusting to life in British Columbia while carrying feelings of displacement, grief, or isolation
- Preferring to express your deepest emotional nuances in Urdu or Hindi without struggling to translate into English

You Do Not Have to Explain Your Culture Here
One of the most exhausting experiences for South Asian individuals in therapy is having to spend half of every session educating their therapist on cultural norms — explaining concepts of family honour, collectivist obligations, community gossip, or the implicit expectations placed upon eldest daughters and sons.
At Soothing Souls Counselling, you can speak freely knowing that your background is understood with immediate depth and respect. We explore:
- Intergenerational Tension: Understanding parental sacrifices and immigration histories while establishing healthy boundaries without crushing guilt.
- Cultural Identity Reconciliation: Finding your authentic voice between Western individualist ideals and South Asian familial roots.
- Marital & In-Law Dynamics: De-escalating couple conflict surrounding joint family living, boundary setting, and differing expectations.
- Silent Stigma & Mental Health: Overcoming the cultural belief that mental health struggles represent spiritual failure or personal weakness.
Bilingual Freedom in Session
Language shapes emotion. Some feelings are expressed most naturally in English, while certain family experiences, nuanced grievances, or tender emotions carry their truest meaning in Urdu or Hindi. You are entirely free to flow between languages throughout our work together.
Fees, Extended Health & Direct Billing
Clinical sessions are $160. Most British Columbia extended health insurance plans cover sessions with a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC).
We provide direct billing for participating extended health plans via TELUS eClaims and Provider Connect (e.g. Pacific Blue Cross, Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife), as well as direct billing for eligible ICBC Enhanced Care claims. Official receipts containing Rimsha Qureshi's BCACC registration (#29320) are issued immediately following every session for seamless submission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can sessions be conducted entirely in Urdu or Hindi?
Yes. Rimsha Qureshi is fluent in English, Urdu, and Hindi. Sessions can take place completely in your chosen language, or you are welcome to switch naturally between languages (code-switching) whenever expressing certain emotions or concepts feels most authentic.
How does cultural attunement differ from standard Western counselling?
Mainstream Western psychology frequently emphasizes individualism, emotional independence, and rigid boundaries. In South Asian cultures, family interdependence, respect for elders, and collective harmony are foundational values. Culturally attuned therapy respects both worlds — helping you foster personal clarity and calm while honouring your meaningful family bonds.
Do you support couples from different cultural or religious backgrounds?
Yes. We work frequently with cross-cultural and interfaith partnerships navigating differing family traditions, wedding expectations, child-rearing values, and communication styles. We create a neutral, non-blaming space for both partners.
Is what I discuss protected from my community or family?
Yes, completely. Confidentiality is paramount. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC #29320) with the BCACC, Rimsha adheres strictly to provincial privacy laws and professional ethics. Nothing you share is disclosed to family members or community members under any circumstances.
Can virtual sessions be accessed from outside Surrey?
Yes. We serve South Asian clients virtually across all of British Columbia — including Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Abbotsford, Delta, Langley, Kelowna, and Vancouver Island. You only need a private space and an internet connection.
