Driving Anxiety After a Car Accident

QUICK CLINICAL SUMMARY

Post-accident driving anxiety counselling helps drivers and passengers overcome panic, hypervigilance, and intersection dread through trauma-informed CBT and somatic grounding. Direct billing to ICBC is available for eligible claims across BC.

Is This Support Right for You?

You might resonate with this counselling focus if you are navigating:

  • ✓ You feel your heart racing, hands gripping the wheel tightly, or breath shortening whenever you drive.
  • ✓ You avoid highways, bridges, heavy traffic, left-hand turns, or the specific intersection where your crash occurred.
  • ✓ You experience intense panic as a passenger, constantly monitoring surrounding traffic and bracing for impact.
  • ✓ Sudden horn honks, screeching brakes, or sudden stops cause intense adrenaline surges or flashbacks.
  • ✓ Your driving fear is interfering with your commute, work responsibilities, family life, or independence.

When the Vehicle Becomes a Threat Alarm

Following a motor vehicle collision on British Columbia’s busy roads — whether along Highway 1, the Fraser Highway, or local intersections — it is remarkably common for the emotional aftermath to outlast physical tissue healing.

Clinically known as vehophobia or post-traumatic driving anxiety, this condition is a protective mechanism gone into overdrive. Your brain has registered vehicles as objects of potential injury, and its alarm circuitry is desperately trying to keep you safe by firing intense panic signals whenever you approach a vehicle or face high-speed traffic.

How Rimsha Works With Post-Crash Driving Phobia

Rimsha Qureshi, MACP, RCC utilizes evidence-based, trauma-informed modalities:

  • Somatic Paced Regulation: Equipping you with rapid self-soothing tools — such as the physiological sigh and sensory anchoring — to down-regulate racing heart rates at red lights or in traffic queues.
  • Graded Systematic Exposure Hierarchy: Collaboratively mapping out your fears from lowest distress (e.g., sitting in a stationary car with engine off) to moderate challenges (quiet residential streets) to high challenges (night driving or highway merges).
  • Cognitive Restructuring: Examining catastrophic predictions (“Every oncoming car is going to hit me”) and developing realistic, calm assessments while maintaining defensive driving awareness.
  • Passenger Anxiety Protocol: Specific cognitive strategies for individuals who experience loss-of-control terror while riding in someone else’s vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is driving anxiety counselling covered under ICBC Enhanced Care?

Yes. Direct billing to ICBC is available for eligible Enhanced Care claims. Up to 12 counselling treatments are pre-approved within the first 12 weeks following a motor vehicle collision, subject to ICBC eligibility. You only need your claim number and Personal Health Number (PHN) to start.

Do we do driving exposure sessions in a physical car?

Soothing Souls Counselling operates 100% virtually. We provide the clinical cognitive and somatic preparation — developing graded exposure hierarchies, nervous system regulation, and panic de-escalation tools — which you then implement at your own pace during your independent driving practice between sessions.

Why did my driving anxiety get worse weeks after the physical crash?

During the immediate days following a crash, adrenaline and practical logistics (vehicle repair, doctor visits) dominate. As acute adrenaline subsides, the brain's threat-detection circuitry begins associating vehicles with genuine mortal peril, often triggering delayed panic or avoidance.

What if my 12 weeks since the crash have already passed?

If your accident occurred more than 12 weeks ago, counselling may still be covered under ICBC Enhanced Care, but requires advance authorization from your ICBC recovery claim representative. We can assist by submitting a collaborative treatment plan.
